Roma Downey, Greenwich, Connecticut
Roma Downey is an actress, producer and author from Northern Ireland. She came to the US with an Irish theater company and took a job as a coat checker at a Manhattan restaurant before getting cast in Broadway shows. She produced and starred in the mini-series The Bible and for nine seasons starred in the CBS series Touched By An Angel. On August 11, 2016 she was honored for her work as an actress and producer with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is an ambassador for Operation Smile, which provides surgeries around the world to children who were born with severe cleft lip and palate. When I worked with Roma, she walked into my room, extended her hand and humbly said, “Hi, I’m Roma.” No airs at all. She was with her PR director, was pressed for time, so we instantly began working. I asked her to give me something different for each shot, which, after a few poses, began to make her feel silly and laugh, became infectious and before long we were all laughing. And therein was my opportunity. Creating an environment where people feel comfortable is the key to getting good portraits.
