10 DAYS KENYA SAFARI
NOVEMBER 9 – NOVEMBER 18, 2016
This 10 day tour is tailored for all ages, including children. You will see a huge array of wildlife, take a boat trip where you can walk among small herds of mammals and stay in beautiful accommodations. The diversity of wildlife is vast, and seeing them in this habitat is much like going back in time. Add to that the land of the Maasai, ancient and fearless warriors who live in harmony with the wildlife as if there were no other ways to live. See and photograph a ‘morani,” or warrior wearing an enkuraru, an ostrich feather headdress that in earlier days was worn during raids and wars to intimidate and give psychological advantage by its added height. Learn about the mandatory circumcision ceremony that all men must endure without anesthetic and without crying out, or shame would befall them.
We will advise you on which equipment is best to bring and work with you to get the most out of your experience. Lessons will be given daily on a wide range of topics to inform and help you reach your goals. We believe that lessons combined with field experience is the best way to learn and we will challenge you to raise your game. Do you want to make a book? We will help you with your capture, then teach you the software.
We are photographers, so we understand what you want to see. The unusual. The extraordinary. That right moment with the best light. That incredible image that tells a special story that will live in your portfolio for years.
Day 1 – Nairobi
On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel, The Sarova Panafric Hotel. Named in honor of the Pan African movement and ideally located only 18km from the airport, you can relax by the pool for the evening.
Day 2 – Nairobi – Lake Nakuru
We will depart in the early morning after breakfast and drive for approximately 2 hours to reach Nakuru town where one of the Rift Valley lakes is located. The world famous Lake Nakuru was made a National Park to protect its stunning flocks of the Lesser Flamingo which oftentimes turns its shores a pink color. This unique congregation of bird wildlife is a beacon for leading ornithologists, scientists and filmmakers. Hippos and other birds are also in abundance. On the shores you will see waterbuck, reedbuck and zebras and if you are lucky you may see a leopard. Dinner and overnight at Flamingo Hill tented camp.
Day 3 Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara
We will depart in the morning for Maasai Mara National Reserve. The Maasai Mara is a large game reserve which is technically an extension of Tanzania’s renowned Serengeti National Park. It is named in honor of the Maasai people and their description of the area. “Mara” means “spotted” in Maa, their language, which was their interpretation of a land covered with trees, scrub, savannah and shadows of clouds across an endless sky. Along the way we will drive past another soda lake, Lake Elementaita which is a favorite spot for flamingos. We will stop briefly at Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake and the highest in the Rift Valley at 1910 meters. We then will proceed to Maasai Mara National Reserve for a late lunch and then an evening game drive. Dinner and overnight at AndBeyond Kichwa Tembo.
Day 4 & 5 Maasai Mara
After an early morning game drive at 7:00 a.m. to work with the best light, we will break for breakfast and leave for a full day game drive to experience the vast savannah, full of plains game and also part of the ecosystem for the great migration of the gnu and zebra. We will spend 2 days exploring the Maasai Mara. The Mara is well known for its exceptional population of Maasai lions, leopards, cheetahs, and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson’s gazelles, and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti every year. All members of the ‘Big Five” (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and black rhinos) are found here. It will not be unusual to see giraffes, hyenas, hippos, gnu, jackals, topi and hartebeest. Dinner and overnight at AndBeyond Kichwa Tembo.
Day 6 Maasai Mara – Lake Naivasha
We will depart after breakfast for Lake Naivasha and arrive in time for lunch. We will take a boat ride to the Crescent Island, where you can walk among small herds of mammals, such as giraffes, antelopes, gazelles, elands, zebras and many birds. It is an exciting place to be, and we will finish the day with dinner and overnight at the Naivasha Sopa.
Day 7 Lake Naivasha
We will depart for Lake Naivasha in the morning and along the way we will stop to enjoy the stunning views. From there we will head to Hell’s Gate National Park, which lies to the south of Lake Naivasha. You can spend time with a nature walk in the beautiful gorge or ride bicycles. The Park is mainly comprised of a savannah ecosystem which includes a wide variety of wildlife. Later in the day we will head to the lodge to have lunch and rest. In the afternoon we will visit the Elsa Mere which was once home to Joy Adamson of “Born Free” fame to learn the history of Elsa the lion. Dinner and overnight at the Naivasha Sopa lodge.
Day 8 Lake Naivasha – Amboseli
We will depart in the morning for Amboseli National Park, which belongs to the elite of Kenya’s national parks. Its most well known attraction is the sight of hundreds of big-tusked elephants set against the backdrop of Africa’s best views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak at 5895 meters. We will also see wildebeest, zebras, and perhaps some lions and hyenas. The park is home to over 370 bird species too. We will arrive in Amboseli National Park in the afternoon, and go for a game drive before we head to our lodge. Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Serena Lodge.
Day 9 Amboseli
After an early morning game drive, we will head back to our lodge for a mid-morning breakfast and rest. If you would like to visit a Maasai village, we can do this now to find out more about their unique way of life. After lunch, we will go for an afternoon game drive. If the weather is clear, impressive views of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro can be seen from Amboseli. Dinner and overnight at Serena Lodge.
Day 10 Amboseli – Nairobi
After breakfast, we will go for a morning game drive then head back to the lodge for lunch. After lunch, we will depart for Nairobi and arrive in the late afternoon.
